Community Harmony: Movement Choir for Our Times

One of the goals and benefits of dance movement therapy is finding agency in the choices that are possible. And another is engaging in finding common ground with others. Both of these are embodied practices: knowing where each of us is most “at home” in our bodies, perceiving the choices that are possible (going for a walk, doing some yoga, just breathing…) and being willing and able to adapt to others in a group without loss of ourselves and our own needs and desires.

A project I have been involved with since its inception is Global Water Dances, a semi-annual event that takes place every other year on a day in June. June 14, 2025 is the date for the next iteration. The event engages communities across the globe in moving together in support of local and worldwide water, whether the issues are about access, too much water, not enough water, corporate takeover of water, sea level rise, and more.

As we start planning for Global Water Dances in June, and as the threats to water sovereignty are in tension with the crying need for water access, particularly where drought has taken hold, we need to act. Acting in concert, finding common ground, sharing knowledge and skills: these matter in the coming challenges. All of it lends fodder to the concept and practices of movement choir.

What is a movement choir? Come and join the conversation and find out. There are two opportunities: one on February 1 and another on February 2. The cost is 5 US dollars.
